What are chromosomes?

Chromosomes are structural unit of gene which are present in cell. Chromosomes are thread-like structures which can carry hereditary information.
Human cells have 46 chromosomes in the nuclei. Each chromosomes are made of protein and one DNA which have organism’s genetic instructions that passed down from parents. Chromosomes are invisible in the nucleus of the cell when the cell is not dividing. In human, animals and plants, almost all chromosomes are paired. Human have 22 pairs of chromosome which are called autosomes. Human have an additional pair of sex chromosomes for total 46 chromosomes. Sex chromosomes are named as X and Y. For female character has XX chromosome pair and male has XY pair of chromosome.
