QUESTION:

Problem 50P

Predict the approximate bond angles:

a. the C-N-C bond angle in (CH3)2+NH2 c. the C-N-H bond angle in (CH3)2NH

b. the C-O-H bond angle in CH3OH d. the C-N-C bond angle in (CH3)2NH

ANSWER:

Solution 50P

Step:1

Here, we are asked to Predict the approximate bond angles of the compounds.

For this we need to know about the bond angle.

The bond length is defined as the distance between the nuclei of two atoms bonded together in any given molecule and bond angle is the angle which is formed between three atoms across at least two bonds.

Now, let’s write and predict the approximate bond angles of the following compounds:-

First we have to find out the hybridization of the Nitrogen which is the central atom.

In this compound nitrogen atom forms only single bonds, if it is single bond so the hybridization will be sp 3.

With the help of hybridization we can find out the bond angle. But Nitrogen is having lone pair of electrons if it is uncharged.

But in the case of dimethylammonium cation Nitrogen is charged.
