QUESTION:

Problem 1P

Oxygen has three isotopes with mass numbers of 16, 17, and 18. The atomic number of oxygen is eight. How many protons and neutrons does each of the isotopes have?

ANSWER:

Solution:

Here we have to find the number of  protons and neutrons present in each of the isotopes of oxygen.

Step 1

It is known that the number of protons in an atom is equal to the atomic number (Z). Number of neutrons is equal to the difference between the mass number of an atom (A) to the atomic number (Z) i.e n = A-Z

Here the oxygen atom has  three isotopes with mass numbers of 16, 17, and 18.

It can be written as 816O , 817O, 818O

816
