QUESTION:

Problem 1P

Determine the molecular formula for each of the following:

a. a 5-carbon hydrocarbon with one π bond and one ring.

b. a 4-carbon hydrocarbon with two π bonds and no rings.

c. a 10-carbon hydrocarbon with one π bond and two rings.

ANSWER:

Solution:

Here we will have to determine the molecular formula of each of the following.

What is the molecular formula: - Molecular formula is a representation of a molecule which will show the total number and kind of atoms involved in it without showing the structural arrangement of the molecule.

Step 1

a. A 5-carbon hydrocarbon with one π bond and one ring

The general molecular formula of hydrocarbon is CnH2n+2

Here n = 5, so if we will write the possible molecular formula by using the general formula, it will be: C5H25+2 = C5H12

But in question, it has been given that the molecule contains one bond and one ring that means we have to subtract four H-atoms from the above molecular formula.

Thus the required molecular formula is C5H8 which has one bond and one ring.
