QUESTION:

Problem 3P

Determine the degree of unsaturation, and then draw possible structures, for compounds with the following molecular formulas:

a. C3H6 b. C3H4 c. C4H6

ANSWER:

Solution:

Here we have to calculate the degree of unsaturation of the given molecular formulas and then we have to draw its possible structure.

Degree of unsaturation:-

Degree of unsaturation represents the sum of the number of -bond  or ring present in a hydrocarbon.

It can be calculated as follows for a given molecular formula,

             CaHbNcOdXe                  where X= F,Cl, Br,I

        Degree of unsaturation = ½ (2 + 2a - b + c -e )

Step 1

a. C3H6

The degree of unsaturation of C3H6 = ½ (2+ 23-6) = ½ (2 + 6 - 6) = 1

The degree of unsaturation of C3H6  is found to be 1

That means the molecule must have one ring or one  -bond in its structure.

The possible structure of the molecule is given below,

CH3CH=CH2

(propene)     (Cyclopropane)
