QUESTION:

Problem 35P

a. Which bond would be longer?

b. Which bond would be stronger?

1 . C-Cl or C-I 2. C-C or C-Cl 3. H-Cl or H-F

ANSWER:

Solution 35P:

Here, we are  going to predict the longest and strongest bond among each pair.

Step 1:

  1.  C-Cl or C-I

As we go down the group in a periodic table, the atomic radius increases with increasing in size. Thus, I atom has much larger size than Cl atom. Therefore, when I atom forms bond with C atom, the bonding between them is longer.

Therefore, C-I bond is longer than C-Cl bond.

On the other hand, bond strength is inversely proportional to the bond length. With the increase in bond length, the strength of the bond decreases. Therefore, among C-Cl and C-I , C-I bond has the longest bond length. Thus, C-I is the weakest bond.

Therefore, C-Cl is the strongest bond.
