QUESTION:

How could the following compounds be synthesized, starting with a hydrocarbon that has the same number of carbons as the desired product?

ANSWER:

Solution 35P

Here, we have to synthesized the products having same number of carbon atom with the reactants.

Step 1: (a)

Here, 1-pentyne undergoes hydroboration-oxidation in the presence of R2BH/THF and OH-/H2O2/H2O to form pentanal under keto-enol tautomerism.

Thus, the reactant( 1-pentyne, 5-carbon atoms) and the product (pentanal 5-carbon atoms) have similar number of carbon atoms.
