Here, we have to determine the hybridization of each of the carbon and oxygen atoms in compound, vitamin C.

Hybridization is the formation of new atom orbital from mixing of the atomic orbitals and the new orbitals have different energy, shapes and etc than the old orbitals. It determines the arrangement of an atom in space of the bonds around the atom.

To determine hybridization, we look at the number of groups attached to C atom :

  • If an atom is bonded to four groups (including lone pairs), then the atom is said to be sp3 hybridized.
  • If an atom is bonded to three groups (including lone pairs), then the atom is said to be sp2 hybridized.
  • If an atom is bonded to two groups (including lone pairs), then it is sp hybridized.
