Assign relative priorities to each set of substituents:

a. \(-\mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{CH}_{3} \quad-\mathrm{CH}\left(\mathrm{CH}_{3}\right)_{2} \quad-\mathrm{CH}=\mathrm{CH}_{2} \quad-\mathrm{CH}_{3}\)

b. \(-\mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{NH}_{2} \quad-\mathrm{NH}_{2} \quad-\mathrm{OH} \quad-\mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{OH}\)

c. \(\begin{array}{llll} -C(=O) C H_{3} & -C H=C H_{2} & -C l & -C \equiv N \end{array}\)

ANSWER:

Solution 48P

Step 1 of 4:

Here, we are asked to assign relative priorities to given set of substituents.

The relative priorities are assigned based on the atomic numbers of the atoms that are bonded directly to the sp2 carbon. The greater the atomic number, the higher is the priority. If there is a tie with the substituents, we assign priorities by considering the atoms to which they are attached.

For example: while assigning the relative priorities with the methyl and ethyl group, we see there is C(carbon) atom in both the groups and thus, there is a tie. So, we look at the other atoms, the C is attached. The C atom of the methyl group is attached to 3 H atoms and the C atom of the ethyl group is attached to C and 2 H atoms. Thus, the ethyl group has a higher priority than the methyl group.

Based on this concept we assign relative priorities to given set of substituents as shown below
