Which reaction in each of the following pairs occurs faster:

ANSWER:

Solution 13P

Step 1 of 4

(a) The first set of reactions involves the reaction of ethyl bromide with either water or hydroxide anion.

Hydroxide anion is a better nucleophile than water due to its higher electron density (it has more lone pairs of electrons). The strength of the nucleophile is an important factor in  reactions. Reaction 2 will proceed at a faster rate.
