QUESTION:

Assuming that the force constant is approximately the same for C-C, C-N, and C-O bonds, predict the relative positions of their stretching vibrations in an IR spectrum.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

The natural frequency of vibration of a bond is given by Hook’s Law expression.

\(\bar{v}=\frac{1}{2 \pi C} \sqrt{\frac{f}{\mu}}\)

Where C =  speed of the light, f = Force constant, and the reduced mass \(\mu\) of the system is given by \(\mu=\frac{m_{1} m_{2}}{m_{1}+m_{2}}\)
