The degree of unsaturation or hydrogen deficiency index (HDI) of the compound can be calculated by using the following formula:

Here, C is the number of carbon atoms, H is the number of hydrogen atoms, X is the number of halogen atoms, and N is the number of nitrogen atoms.

Determine the structure of an unknown organic molecule with molecular formula that exhibits the givenspectra.

Now we have to calculate degree of unsaturation. Substitute the values in equation (1).

The molecular formula has a hydrogen deficiency index of one. This indicates that C=O group is present in the compound.

The signal farthest downfield of triplet indicates that the carbon attached to the oxygen bonded to a group. The signal farthest up-field of another triplet indicates that it too is attached to a  group.

Hence, Unknown compound must have the group.

Three hydrogens of singlet at 2.1 ppm indicate the following group must be present in an unknown compound.
