Problem 3RQ

What is evaporation, and why is it a cooling process? Exactly what is it that cools?

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

Solution 3RQ Part 1 Evaporation is a process by which any liquid changes its phase from liquid to gas of vapour state. Evaporation is different from boiling in the sense that evaporation occurs at a lower temperature that the boiling point. Evaporation is a slow process and occurs at the surface of the liquid. Part 2 During the evaporation process, the phase of the liquid changes from liquid to vapour. For this phase change, the molecules which change its phase need latent heat. The latent heat of the evaporation is supplied by the rest of the liquid, hence the liquid gets cooled. Since, in this process, the liquid get cooled, the process is called cooling process. Part 3 In this process, the liquid which is going through evaporation is cooled.
