Problem 40E

Why does the water in a car radiator sometimes boil explosively when the radiator cap is removed?

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

The water in a car radiator sometimes boil explosively when the radiator cap is removed. because when the cap is removed the liquid inside wants to start cooling itself. The heat energy is released by boiling.when you open that radiator cap, it causes a drastic change in pressure, a drop. If the water is only warm, just under 200F, say, it will likely just boil violently. If it is above the normal boiling point, that pressure was all that was keeping it liquid. This violent change from liquid to gas is known as flashing. It changes states of matter, and releases a huge and violent amount of energy. Or When radiator cap is removed, the pressure applied by it is reduced and the boiling temperature in the car radiator decreases to room temperature.however at that time when we remove the radiator cap water in the car radiator may boil.
