Do adiabatic parcels occur in the atmosphere, in the ocean, or in both?
Solution 38E In the atmosphere adiabatic and nonadiabatic process taking place continuously.the air near the ground is receiving heat from or giving heat to the ground.these are nonadiabatic process.however in the free atmosphere somewhat removed from earth surface, the short period process are adiabatic. The adiabatic form of first law for seawater is C pT = vdP. When water mass is raised adiabatically from the deeper layers to the surface, the pressure decreases and the water mass cools.when a mass of water is adiabatically from surface into the deeper layers, the temperature increases. The adiabatic lapse rate is generally said to be proportional to the work done on a fluid parcel as its volume changes due to a pressure change (increase/ decrease). Hence the adiabatic parcels occur in the both atmosphere and ocean.
