QUESTION:

Some people say that all things are possible. Is it at all possible for a common hydrogen nucleus to emit an alpha particle? Defend your answer.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

The unstable nuclei decay to become stable and this process is called radioactivity. A common hydrogen atom cannot emit an a-particle. Such an emission would violate the principle of conservation of mass since the mass of a hydrogen atom is nearly four times smaller than the mass of an alpha particle.
