Starting with a fundamental tone, how many harmonics are between the first and second octaves? Between the second and third octaves? (See Figure 21.5 to get started.)

Solution 8P The 1st octave is the 2 nd harmonic and the 2 nd octave is the 4 th harmonic. Therefore, the 3rd harmonic lies between the 1st and 2 nd octaves. The 3 rd octave is equivalent to the 8 th harmonic. Therefore, between the 4th harmonic ( 2nd octave) and 8 th harmonic (3 rd octave), the remaining harmonics are the 5 th, 6 th and 7 th.
