When two or more waves having same frequency come across, standing waves occur. In the picture above, the red and the blue waves have the same frequency and moving in opposite direction. The interference of them produces the black one, that is standing wave.  Every elements of the standing wave have certain amplitude depends on its location in space so standing waves are called interference in space.
