QUESTION:

Problem 15Q

When hot-air furnaces are used to heat a house, why is it important that there be a vent for to return to the furnace? What happens if this vent is blocked by a bookcase?

ANSWER:

Step-by-step solution

Step 1 of 2

Hot air furnaces used to heat a house should  have a vent for the air to return to the furnace, because convective currents need to circulate throughout the room if the room is to be  equally heated. When the furnace heats the air in the room, it expands and therefore its density decreases. When the density becomes less, it becomes light and therefore rises. The cold air is rushing inside though the vent and sets up the convectional current of air, as a result of which the entire house gets heated.
