Problem 26Q

Heat loss occurs through windows by the following processes: (1) through the glass panes; (2) through the frame, particularly if it is metal; (3) ventilation around edges; and (4) radiation, (a) For the first three, what is (are) the mechanism(s): conduction, convection, or radiation? (b) Heavy curtains reduce which of these heat losses? Explain in detail.

ANSWER:

Step-by-step solution

Step 1 of 2

a)

Through the glass panes the heat is loss by the process of convection. The hot air being light rises up, and escapes through the edges.

Through the frame the heat loss is by the process of conduction. The metal frames being good conductors of heat conduct the heat to the outside.

Through the ventilation around edges cooling is by conduction and radiation.
