Problem 17E

Determine whether each of these conditional statements is true or false.

a) If 1 + 1 = 2, then 2+ 2 =5.

b)If 1 + 1 = 3, then 2 + 3 = 4.

c) If 1 + 1= 3, then 2 + 2 = 5.

d) If monkeys can fly, then 1 + 1=3.

Step-by-Step Solution:

Step 1:

In this problem we have to determine the given conditional statements are true or false.

Definition of conditional :

If the first statement is true and second statement is false then false otherwise all true. the conditional operator is denoted by . the conditional pq  represents “ if p then q”.

Table of conditional :

p

q

pq

Step 2:

a:

Let 1 + 1 = 2 is p statement and  2+ 2 =5 is  q statement .

Clearly p statement is true and q statement is also false.

Hence pq is false.

Consequently if 1 + 1 = 2, then 2+ 2 =5 is FALSE statement.

Step 3:

b:

Let 1 + 1 = 3 is p statement and 2 + 3 = 4 is  q statement .

Clearly p statement is false  and q statement is also false.

Hence pq is true .

Consequently  If 1 + 1 = 2, then 2+ 2 =5  is TRUE  statement.
