QUESTION:

Problem 18Q

Explain in words how Charles’s law follows from kinetic theory and the relation between average kinetic energy and the absolute temperature.

ANSWER:

Solution 18Q

Step 1 of 2

We have to explain in words how Charles’s law follows from kinetic theory and the relation between average kinetic energy and the absolute temperature.

Charles’s law states that “the volume of a fixed quantity of gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature when the pressure is kept constant”.

If the temperature of the gas raises then the molecules will have more kinetic energy and starts moving with a higher speed. The average force exerted by a gas molecule which is colliding with the wall of a container also increases and is directly proportional to kinetic energy of the colliding molecules(absolute temperature of the gas).
