When a force is applied on a spring, the length of the string will increase according to the force applied. The restoring force which is experienced on the spring is proportional to,

F ∝ - x

Where, x - the change in length of the spring

We are putting a negative sign because, the restoring force is acting against the change in length of the spring.

So, the work done would be, W = F x
