QUESTION:

Problem 27E

An ore sample weighs 17.50 N in air. When the sample is suspended by a light cord and totally immersed in water, the tension in the cord is 11.20 N. Find the total volume and the density of the sample.

ANSWER:

Solution 27E

Step 1:

Weight of the sample in air, Wair = 17.50 N

Weight of the sample in water, Wwater = 11.20 N

Change in weight of the sample while immersing it in the water from the air, W = Wair - Wwater

 W = 17.50 N - 11.20 N = 6.30 N

So, we can write, mg = 6.30 N

Where m - mass of the sample and g - acceleration due to gravity

Therefore, mass of the sample, m = 6.30 N / 9.8 m/s2 = 0.643 kg
