QUESTION:

You drive a car up a steep hill at constant speed. Discuss all of the forces that act on the car. What pushes it up the hill?

ANSWER:

Solution 4DQ Step 1 There are several force that is acting on the car in this case. The first force is the weight of the car which will act vertically downwards. We can now split the weight in two component, one perpendicular to the surface of the slope and other parallel to the surface of the slope. Then there will be normal reaction of the by the surface which will act on the car and the direction in perpendicular to the surface of the slope. There will also be force applied to car by its engine which will be parallel to the surface of the slope and upward. Finally there will be friction between the car wheel and the hill surface, which will act against the direction of the velocity of the car. I have shown all the forces in the diagram below. One thing must be noted that since the car is moving in constant velocity, total force must be equal to zero.
