QUESTION:

Problem 47E

For diatomic carbon dioxide gas (CO2, molar mass 44.0 g/mol) at T = 300 K, calculate (a) the most probable speed vmp; (b) the average speed vav; (c) the root-mean-square speed rms.

ANSWER:

Solution 47E

Step 1:

Molar mass of CO2 = 44.0 g/ mol

1 mol is having avogadro number of molecules in it.

Therefore, 1 mol = NA = 6.023 × 1023 molecules

Therefore, Molar mass of CO2 = 44 g / (6.023 × 1023) = 7.31 × 10-23 g

1 g = 10-3 kg

Therefore, molar mass of CO2 = 7.31 × 10-26 kg
