Problem 5DQ

A truck is accelerating as it speeds down the highway. One inertial frame of reference is attached to the ground with its origin at a fence post. A second frame of reference is attached to a police car that is traveling down the highway at constant velocity. Is the momentum of the truck the same in these two reference frames? Explain. Is the rate of change of the truck’s momentum the same in these two frames? Explain.

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 5DQ Step 1: The truck is accelerating downwards. One thing which is extremely important here, is the acceleration. Velocity is relative but acceleration is not. When something is accelerating, it is experiencing a force which can be felt and it is independent of the frame of reference chosen. The velocity of the truck with respect to the point and the police car is different. So, the momentum is also not same for the two reference frames. The momentum is continuously changing as the truck is accelerating.
