QUESTION:

How many sigma bonds and pi bonds are there in each of the following molecules?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

Covalent bond:

A covalent bond is formed by the sharing of a pair of electrons.

There are three types of covalent bonds.

   Sigma bond ()

   Pi bond ()

Sigma bond:

A Covalent bond formed by the end- to- end overlapping of an atomic orbitals,  with the electron density concentrated between the nuclei of the bonding atoms.

It is the strongest covalent bond between two atoms.

Pi bond:

A covalent bond is formed by the sideways overlapping of an atomic orbitals, with the electron density concentrated above and below plan of the nuclei.
