QUESTION:
How is vapor-pressure lowering related to a rise in the boiling point of a solution?
ANSWER:Step 1 of 2
Lowering Vapor pressure is observed when a non-volatile solute is added to solvent at a given temperature and pressure.
In a pure solvent, evaporation happens from the surface without any restriction. But when a non-volatile solute is added to the volatile solvent, some area on the surface of the solvent will be occupied by the non-volatile solute. Thus, evaporation from this occupied area becomes impossible. Therefore, comparatively, the escape of solvent molecules from the solution is difficult compared to the pure solvent. As a result, vapor pressure decreases.
