QUESTION:

Name two advantages of a nuclear-powered submarine over a conventional submarine.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

Onboard nuclear reactors provide the power for nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers. Atoms split in the nuclear reactor, releasing energy in the form of heat. High-pressure steam is made with this heat. The propeller is powered by the steam propulsion turbines, which are turned by the steam.

The electric motors that propel conventional submarines are powered by batteries that are recharged by onboard diesel engines.
