QUESTION:

Problem 1E

Why do you not hear the sound of distant fireworks until after you see them?

ANSWER:

Solution 1E

Step 1:

The speed of light and sound are different. Speed of light, c = 3 × 108 m/s

Speed of sound in air, v = 340 m/s

The source of sound and light as a part of the firework is originating at the same time. Since it is travelling at different speeds, there will be a specific time lag between the light and the sound.
