Mechanical energy is defined as the sum of potential and kinetic energy of an object. Kinetic energy is associated with the motion of the object whereas the potential energy is the energy possessed by the object at rest. Mechanical energy can directly be converted into any mechanical work completely.

Step 2 of 3:

Difference between thermal and mechanical energy.

The thermal energy of the system is due to the random motion of molecules present in the system. But in the case of mechanical energy, it's due to the position and motion of the system. Mechanical energy can be converted into thermal energy directly and completely. Whereas thermal energy is not mechanical energy, and it can not be converted fully and directly into mechanical energy.
