QUESTION:

Problem 57P

A Pitot-static probe connected to a water manometer is used to measure the velocity of air. If the deflection (the vertical distance between the fluid levels in the two arms) is

7.3 cm, determine the air velocity. Take the density of air to be 1.25 kg/m3.

ANSWER:

Solution to 57P

Step 1

We need to find the air velocity in the pitot-static probe which is connected to the water manometer.

We will use Bernoulli’s principle to find the air velocity.

Consider two points 1 and 2, one just above the pitot tube where the air is flowing parallel to the tube and the other at the entrance of the pitot tube where the air is stagnant. The velocity at point 1 is the actual air speed.
