The two atoms in a diatomic molecule exert anattractive

Chapter 8, Problem 8.110

(choose chapter or problem)

The two atoms in a diatomic molecule exert anattractive force on each other at large distances and arepulsive force at short distances. The magnitude of theforce between two atoms in a diatomic molecule canbe approximated by the Lennard-Jones force, orF(r) = F0 [2(cr/r)13 (cr/r)7], where r is the separationbetween the two atoms, and a and F0 are constant. For anoxygen molecule (which is diatomic) F0 = 9.60 X 10-11 Nand a = 3.50 X 10-11 m. (a) Integrate the equation forF(r) to determine the potential energy U(r) of the oxygenmolecule. (b) Find the equilibrium distance r0 between thetwo atoms, (c) Graph F(r) and U(r) between 0.9 r0 and 2.5 r0.
