(choose chapter or problem)

Astronomers estimate that a 2.0-km-wide asteroid collideswith the Earth once every million years. The collisioncould pose a threat to life on Earth, (a) Assume a sphericalasteroid has a mass of 3200 kg for each cubic meter ofvolume and moves toward the Earth at 15km/s. Howmuch destructive energy could be released when it embedsitself in the Earth? (b) For comparison, a nuclear bombcould release about 4.0 X 1016J. How many such bombswould have to explode simultaneously to release thedestructive energy of the asteroid collision with the Earth?
