Healthy nurses? Th e Nurses Health Study has surveyed a sample of over 100,000 female registered nurses every 2 years since 1976. Beginning in 1980, the study asked questions about diet, including alcohol consumption. Aft er looking at all deaths among these nurses, the researchers concluded: As compared with nondrinkers and heavy drinkers, light-to-moderate drinkers had a signifi cantly lower risk of death.12 Th e word signifi cantly in this conclusion has a technical meaning. Explain to someone who knows no statistics what signifi cant means in a statistical study.
