Chapter 7, Problem 7.51

(choose chapter or problem)

Even more on blood A persons blood type can be further classifi ed based on whether a certain substance known as a Rhesus antigen is present. For example, a person with type B blood and the Rhesus antigen present is said to be type B1 (B-positive). A person with type B blood but without the Rhesus antigen present would be type B (B-negative). (a) People with blood type B1 can receive blood from anyone with blood type O or B. Whats the probability that a randomly selected person from the United States can donate blood to someone with blood type B1? (b) In the United States, 84% of people have the Rhesus antigen present, 8.5% of people have blood type B1 and 1.5% have blood type B. Suppose we choose a U.S. person at random and record his or her blood type. Construct a Venn diagram that displays event B 5 has blood type B and event P 5 has the Rhesus antigen present.
