The performance of the starter circuit in an automobilecan

Chapter 26, Problem 26.12

(choose chapter or problem)

The performance of the starter circuit in an automobilecan be significantly degraded by a small amount ofcorrosion on a battery terminal. Figure 26-38a depicts aproperly functioning circuit with a battery (12.5-V emf,0.02-0 internal resistance)attached via corrosion-freecables to a starter motor ofresistance R$ = 0.15 O.Suppose that later, corrosionbetween a batteryterminal and a startercable introduces an extraseries resistance of justRc = 0.100 into thecircuit as suggested inFig. 26-38b. Let P0 be thepower delivered to thestarter in the circuit free ofcorrosion, and let P be thepower delivered to thecircuit with corrosion.Determine the ratio P /P q-FIGURE 26-38 14.
