A parallel-plate capacitor is filled with a dielectric

Chapter 26, Problem 26.45

(choose chapter or problem)

A parallel-plate capacitor is filled with a dielectric ofdielectric constant K and high resistivity p (it conducts veryslightly). This capacitor can be modeled as a pure capacitanceC in parallel with a resistance R. Assume a batteryplaces a charge +Q and Q on the capacitors opposingplates and is then disconnected. Show that the capacitordischarges with a time constant r = K e0p (known as thedielectric relaxation time). Evaluate r if the dielectric is glasswith p = 1.0 X 1012fl-m and K = 5.0.
