Discuss whether this statement is correct: “In the absence of air resistance, the trajectory of a projectile thrown near the earth’s surface is an ?ellipse?, not a parabola.”

Solution Step 1 of 3 The path that moving object follows is know as trajectory. Whereas Projectile motion involves the trajectories and velocities of the objects that have been shot, thrown or launched. In the given problem, we need to find whether the object thrown near the earth's surface in the absence of the air resistance will have ellipse trajectory or parabola. Step 2 of 3 In the absence of the air resistance when the object is thrown, the horizontal component of the acceleration is zero. Which means it travels equal horizontal distance in equal interval of time. Hence the horizontal velocity is constant. Also the vertical velocity increases as it falls down under absence of air resistance, hence it displaces larger distance in equal interval of time due to acceleration due to gravity. Hence the object covers larger distance in the absence of air drag, but the trajectory remains parabola as shown in the figure below
