A photomultiplier tube (a very sensitive light sensor),

Chapter 37, Problem 37.25

(choose chapter or problem)

A photomultiplier tube (a very sensitive light sensor), isbased on the photoelectric effect: incident photons strikea metal surface and the resulting ejected electrons arecollected. By counting the number of collected electrons, thenumber of incident photons (i.e., the incident light intensity)can be determined. (a) If a photomultiplier tube is torespond properly for incident wavelengths throughout thevisible range (410 nm to 750 nm), what is the maximumvalue for the work function W0 (eV) of its metal surface?(b) If W0 for its metal surface is above a certain thresholdvalue, the photomultiplier will only function for incidentultraviolet wavelengths and be unresponsive to visible light.Determine this threshold value (eV).
