Solved: Consider a monatomic solid with a weakly bound

Chapter 40, Problem 40.73

(choose chapter or problem)

Consider a monatomic solid with a weakly bound cubiclattice, with each atom connected to six neighbors, each bondhaving a binding energy of 3.9 X 10-3 eV. When this solidmelts, its latent heat of fusion goes directly into breaking thebonds between the atoms. Estimate the latent heat of fusionfor this solid, in J/mol. [Hint: Show that in a simple cubiclattice (Fig. 40-46), there are three times as many bonds asthere are atoms, when the number of atoms is large.] 73.
