Solved: Narrow bars of aluminum are bonded to the two

Chapter 2, Problem 2.12

(choose chapter or problem)

Narrow bars of aluminum are bonded to the two sides of a thicksteel plate as shown. Initially, at T1 5 708F, all stresses are zero.Knowing that the temperature will be slowly raised to T2 and thenreduced to T1, determine (a) the highest temperature T2 that doesnot result in residual stresses, (b) the temperature T2 that willresult in a residual stress in the aluminum equal to 58 ksi. Assumeaa 5 12.8 3 1026/8F for the aluminum and as 5 6.5 3 1026/8Ffor the steel. Further assume that the aluminum is elastoplasticwith E 5 10.9 3 106 psi and sY 5 58 ksi. (Hint: Neglect the smallstresses in the plate.Fig. P2.121
