Solved: A roof structure consists of plywood and roofing

Chapter 5, Problem 5.96

(choose chapter or problem)

A roof structure consists of plywood and roofing material supportedby several timber beams of length L 5 16 m. The deadload carried by each beam, including the estimated weight of thebeam, can be represented by a uniformly distributed load wD 5350 N/m. The live load consists of a snow load, represented by auniformly distributed load wL 5 600 N/m, and a 6-kN concentratedload P applied at the midpoint C of each beam. Knowingthat the ultimate strength for the timber used is sU 5 50 MPa andthat the width of each beam is b 5 75 mm, determine the minimumallowable depth h of the beams, using LRFD with the loadfactors gD 5 1.2, gL 5 1.6 and the resistance factor f 5 0.9.
