Problem 8.88

Water is added to pure sulfuric acid in a well-insulated flask initially at 25C and 1 atm to produce a 4.00-molar sulfuric acid solution (SG = 1.231). The final temperature of the product solution is to be 25C, so that the water added must be chilled liquid (T < 25C), or a mixture of liquid water and ice. Take as a basis of calculation one liter of the product solution and assume Q = tlH for the process. If you need to know the heat capacity of ice, take it to be half that of liquid water. (a) If only liquid water is added, what masses (g) of H2S04 and H20 should be mixed and what should be the initial temperature of the water? (b) If a mixture of liquid water and ice is added, how many grams of each should be fed?

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

4/22/16: The Holocaust. The Holocaust. ***test questions***  Background: o Einsatzgruppen (SS Death Squads) followed the German army into the Soviet Union.  Mobil killing units.  Their job was to round up the Jewish population in the Soviet Union and kill them.  The unit would call the Jewish people out of their homes, bring all of their belongings, turn them over, undress and then be executed onebyone.  There was a problem with this process of killing:  Too slow.  Not efficient enough to shoot them individually.  Too stressful for the SS men.  January 20, 1942—The Wannsee Conference. o Had to come up with a new way of killing the Jewish population. o Reinhard Heydrich chaired this meeting of 15 men to coordinate the “Final Solution of the Jewish Problem”.  Adolf Eichmann was the Secretary.  Heinrich Himmler and the SS were given the task of carrying out the plan.  13 other men represented the other departments in the role that will carry out the plan.  Planned genocide.  No men objected to the plan.  Members were enthusiastic about doing their part. o The plan:  Comb Europe from east to West foe Jews.  Deported them to the eastPoland.  Outline the death of the deportees.  6 death camps were constructed in Poland. o Auschwitz was the major one.  The “industrialization of death”. o Use of technology/developments in industry for mass murder.  Used the railroad to transport millions of Jewish people to Poland.  Brought the Jewish people to Poland, and brought back 2,000 freight cars full of belongings to Germany.  Gas will be used to kill more efficiently and quickly. 1 4/22/16: The Holocaust.  Was able to kill 2,000 people in less than 30 minutes.  Personal killings will still be used. o Examples of resistance to deportation:  Denmark.  In the fall of 1943, Danish people saved 7,200 of the 7,700 Jewish people in Denmark from deportation.  They would hide the Jewish people and ship them on ferries over to Sewden.  Johannes Bogaard of the Netherlands.  He and his family hid Jewish children throughout their farms.  Saved more than 300 Jews, many of them children. o The Nazis killed between 56 million Jewish people.  Nearly 2/3 of the Jewish population in Europe. 2
