Here we have to show the following synthesis:-

Step 1

2-phenylethanol can be converted into 3-phenylpropanoic acid by the following 3 steps. In the 1st step 2-phenyl ethanol in presence of thionyl bromide (SOBr2) forms 2-phenylethyl bromide along with HBr and SO2. In the 2nd step 2-phenylethyl bromide will react in presence of Mg and dry ether and forms 2-phenylethyl magnesium bromide which in presence of CO2 and hydronium ion forms 3-phenylpropanoic acid as the product.
