QUESTION:

Refer to Exercise 3.

a. Plot the residuals versus the fitted values. Does the plot indicate any serious violations of the standard assumptions?

b. Plot the residuals versus the order of the data. Does the plot indicate any serious violations of the standard assumptions?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 5

(a)

Let n=59

\(x_{i}=T_{i}\)  and \(y_{i}=T_{i+1}\)

We can compute the slope and the intercept of the least square line as:

\(\begin{aligned} \hat{\beta} & =\frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n}(x-\bar{x})(y-\bar{y})}{\sum_{i=1}^{n}(x-\bar{x})^{2}} \\ & =-0.6957 \\ \hat{\beta}_{0} & =\bar{y}-\hat{\beta}_{1} \bar{x} \\ & =120.1750 \end{aligned}\)

Hence the least square line for predicting \(T_{i+1}\) from \(T_{i}\) is \(T_{i+1}=120.1750-0.6957 T_{1}\)
