Chapter 8, Problem 7SE

(choose chapter or problem)

In a study to predict temperature from air pressure in a piston–cylinder device, 19 measurements were made of temperature in \({ }^{\circ} \mathrm{F}\) \((y)\) and air pressure in psi \((x)\). Three models were fit: the linear model \(y=\beta_{0}+\beta_{1} x+\varepsilon\), the quadratic model \(y=\beta_{0}+\beta_{1} x+\beta_{2} x^{2}+\varepsilon\), and the cubic model \(y=\beta_{0}+\beta_{1} x+\beta_{2} x^{2}+\beta_{3} x^{3}+\varepsilon\). The residuals and fitted values for each model are presented in the following table. Plot the residuals versus the fitted values for each model. For each model, state whether the model is appropriate, and explain.
