QUESTION:

Problem 18P

Calculate the rms speed of a nitrogen molecule at room temperature.

ANSWER:

Solution

Step 1

Atomic weight of nitrogen = 14 g/mol

The rms velocity of the nitrogen molecule is find out by using the formula

Vrms =

Where  T=Room temperature in kelvin =27+273 =300K

K is the boltzmann constant K= 1.3810-23 J/K

M is the mass of the molecule =2141.66110 -27

     m = 4.6410-23 g

     m= 4.6410-27 kg

K T =1.3810-23 300

K T =4.1410-21 J
