Chapter 13, Problem 13.71

(choose chapter or problem)

A 1.6-kg block on a horizontal surface is attached to a spring with a force constant of 1.0 103 N/m, as in Active Figure 13.1. The spring is compressed a distance of 2.0 cm, and the block is released from rest. (a) Calculate the speed of the block as it passes through the equilibrium position, x 0, if the surface is frictionless. (b) Calculate the speed of the block as it passes through the equilibrium position if a constant frictional force of 4.0 N retards its motion. (c) How far does the block travel before coming to rest in part (b)?
